The Driveway: Unexpected Help

Unexpected Help  (Wednesday, October 25)

And the Lord shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in Him.  (Psalm 37:40 NKJV)

Our return to the House at the end of the Driveway was almost inevitable.  There were so many questions that we were seeking answers to.  There were doubts creeping in about what we had experienced so far.  There was also a level of fear that we simply weren’t used to feeling.  We had to go back, if for no other reason than for our own peace of mind.

So, just a few days after the Encounter at Chad’s house, Craig and I returned to the House at the end of the Driveway.  There were a few differences this time.  We made the decision that no one else would go with us.  We weren’t exactly sure what we were dealing with, but we weren’t going to put anyone else in a potentially dangerous situation.  We also decided that we needed to be more careful, and more prepared.

Over the next several weeks Craig and I made several trips back to the House.  We went looking for answers.  We went looking for closure.  We went looking for understanding.  We also went prepared.  We never again returned to the House without letting others know where we were going.  We made sure that our trips were as clandestine as possible.  We also began having a moment of prayer before ever approaching the House.  The good news is that these trips to the House didn’t lead to any further encounters, questions, or complications.  The bad news is that they also didn’t lead to any answers.

Most Friday and Saturday nights found the House busy with some teenage parties.  Once, we even watched as several police cars made their way down the Driveway, only to return moments later.  We knew that people were at the House, but’s it’s like they simply vanished.

Weeks turned into months, and we still had no idea what exactly was happening at the House.  We certainly had our thoughts and opinions, but we were no closer to understanding things than we were at the beginning.

Back in the day, Friday nights were usually date nights.  We’d all go out with our girlfriends and then meet up afterwards.  Most of the time we ended up at the North Kansas City Bowling Alley and played arcade games.  Sometimes we’d meet up with a group of guys, grab a pizza and just hang out.  Occasionally we’d engage in the art of “tee-peeing” someone’s house (That’s a whole other story!).  Often, we did all of the above!

This was one of those Fridays where Craig, Chad and I met up at the Bowling Ally where we played a few arcade games and grabbed some food.  Then we sat out to “tee pee” a lucky person’s home (yes, I remember whose home we were planning on “tee peeing”; no, I will not reveal that information!).  But first, we  headed to the store to get the needed supplies.

On the way to our “tee-pee” target we were driving past a large field when we noticed a vehicle sitting out in the middle, with a person desperately trying to push it out.  We pulled over and made our way out through the soggy and swampy field to see if we could be of assistance.  The car was stuck in the muddy field, and it took several minutes for the four of us to get it to the road.

The teen driving the car expressed his thanks for helping to get his dad’s car out of the field.  We told him that he might want to head to a car wash before taking the car home.  He explained that he didn’t have any way to express his thanks, other than information about a “really cool party” at an old, abandoned farmhouse.  To say that this piqued our interest would be a massive understatement.

He told us about the House at the end of the Driveway, where it was and how to get there.  When we told him that we had heard the police were always trying to catch people there, but were unable to, he just smiled.  He then began to tell us about the “path” that led to the backside of the House.  He explained that there was a field there that people would park in and walk to the House.  He also told us that one of the two houses at the beginning of the Driveway was always looking out and letting them know when the police were about to go down the Driveway.

He thanked us again for our help.  We thanked him for the “invite” to the House.  Then we went our separate ways.  I assume he went to clean his father’s car before heading home.  We, well, we went to our “tee-peeing” target, but we went with a little extra excitement as we finally had what we believed to be the final piece in the puzzle.
