The Driveway: The Backdoor

The Backdoor  (Wednesday, November 8)

For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’  (Isaiah 41:13 NKJV)

The “tee-peeing” of our friend’s house was magnificent.  In fact, it was sone of our best work!  We wrapped the individual branches of the trees with toilet paper, then we wrapped the entire tree.  The trees ended up looking like giant q-tips!  We wrapped the boards and railings of the deck.  We even took the time to weave the toilet paper into the chain-linked fence.  It was a thing of beauty.  Once we finished our work, we made our way to Macken Park where we began to discuss this newfound information.

None of us were exactly sure where this “backdoor” to the House really was; we weren’t even positive that the driver was telling us the truth.  Craig and I decided to take some time the next afternoon to try and find this “backdoor”;  Chad was unavailable to help.  That night, we went our separate ways excited and optimistic, but still a little leery of what might lie ahead.

The next day Craig and I met up to begin our search for the “backdoor”.  We began our search by driving past the Driveway a couple of times, making sure that nothing was out of the ordinary from that vantage point.  Then we parked, made our way through the woods to where we could see the house and make sure that there was no one there.  After convincing ourselves that no one was at the house, and after building up our courage, we headed back to the car ready to begin our search.

We drove to the field where, the night before, we rescued the stuck driver from the muddy field monster.  We pulled off the road to begin talking about how to begin our search.  We also wandered how much trouble the young man got into when he got home. We ultimately decided that the best course of action would be to park the car and carry out our search on foot.

Looking for something that you have lost is one thing.  Looking for something that is unfamiliar can be both frustrating and extremely difficult.  The only information we had was some verbal instructions from our young stuck friend.  Our search found us hiking across fields, through multiple groves of trees, ankle deep in mud, knee deep in water crossing a couple of creeks, and basically lost, confused, and doubtful that we would ever succeed in our search.

There were a couple of times that we thought we had found the “backdoor” only to find ourselves at another impasse.  We had spent several hours hiking, looking, and often going in circles.  We were tired, wet, muddy, frustrated, and miles away from where we had left the car.  Ultimately, we gave up and decided to make our way back to the car.  Our plan was to get cleaned up, pick up Chad and come up with another plan.

Crossing yet another small creek, and getting more wet, we froze in our muddy boots at what we were seeing.  There, on the other side of the creek, running parallel with it as far as we could see, in both directions was a path that had clearly been used by vehicles of various sizes.  A feeling of triumph encompassed us, and we decided to see where this path led us.

Not knowing which direction to go we decided to head to our right.  We followed the path for what seemed like forever, and then there it was, a field.  I know that sounds anticlimactic, but somehow, we knew that this was where the people were parking.  This was the parking lot to the “backdoor”.

Taking a moment to look around and get our bearings we noticed a small trail heading into the woods.  We decided to follow it.  Less than a hundred feet later we found ourselves coming into an opening where we had a full view of the back side of the House.

In shock we stepped out from the trees and realized that we had indeed found the “backdoor”.  We immediately began to ask, “What now?”  We literally had no idea what our next move would be, but we knew that we didn’t want to stay where we were for too long.

So, back down the path we went and several minutes later we found ourselves right back at the field where we had helped pull the car out of the field.  Mere minutes later we were back in the car.  For the first time in what seemed to be forever, we were hopeful, excited, and determined to  put this mystery to bed.  But first, we needed to get cleaned up, meet up with Chad, tell him what we had found, and make some plans.

Join us next time for the Last Rodeo.
