The Driveway: Into the House

Into the House  (Wednesday, July 26)

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”                                                                                (Deuteronomy 31:6 NKJV)

Magicians are constantly making items, and people, disappear and then reappear.  This is nothing new.  In magic you know that there is a gimmick, or a deception, that makes the trick possible.  What Craig and I experienced on our last journey to the house was not a gimmick or a deception.  It was far more real than any magic trick could ever be.  It was far more real than we could have ever imagined.  Let me be absolutely clear, we saw a ladder lying against the side of the house, and then moments later that ladder was gone.

The disappearing ladder stuck in our minds until we decided that we just had to figure out where it had gone, and how, and why!  We knew that the only way to solve this mystery was for us to return and once again encounter the unknown.  Shaken by our previous encounters, and more than just a little nervous, we decided to swallow our fears and try and get some answers.

Once again, we parked Craig’s vehicle in the neighborhood that lay about a half a mile from the driveway and the house.  We slowly approached the very spot where we had previously seen the shadowy creature with the neon green eyes, and we began a several minute process of making as sure as possible that no one was anywhere around us, in or around the house, or down the driveway.  It was only after assuring ourselves that we were alone that we decided to proceed.

Leaving the cover of the woods we once again stepped back onto the driveway and headed towards the front porch.  The ladder was not in sight, and there was nothing that was there that had not been there previously.  It was with a significant amount of fear that we took their first steps up onto the porch.

The walls on either side of the front door were covered with various graffiti and symbols that made no sense.  The two front windows, one on either side of the front door, were long ago broken out, and you could make out the shape of tattered sheets that had been hung on the inside as make-shift curtains.

The right side of the porch was open to the side yard.  The railing had been busted and was left hanging off the edge.  It had been that way for a long time, as the grass and the weeds had grown up around it.  The left side of the porch was where it had previously looked to us that someone had made a bonfire.  There were broken branches piled up in a burnt and charred pile.  It was evident that multiple fires had been set on this end of the porch by the amount of ash, and the number of burnt branches.  It was also evident that this was something far more than just teenagers building a fire to keep warm and roast marshmallows.

In the ash of the fire, in various stages of decomposition, were the remains of several small animals.  There were bones, teeth, and skulls; all evidence of fires from months, or even years before.  There were also partially burned carcasses that seemed to indicate more recent activity.

An eerie feeling, and another wave of fear came over us as we stood on that porch looking at the remains resting in the ash.  We stood there for several minutes discussing what we were seeing, and what it could possibly mean.  Once again, the driveway and the house seemed to provide far more questions than answers.

Craig and I went to the house that day for one purpose, to enter the house, so we turned and faced the door.  Surprisingly intact, the doorknob turned easily, and it opened without hesitation.  It opened into a large room that spanned the entire width of the house.  Directly in front of us lay the stairway that went to the second floor, the room with windows on all sides.  To the left of the stairways was another room, perhaps the Dining Room, and the Kitchen lay just beyond it.  To the right of the stairways was a hallway leading back to two Bedrooms.  Immediately to the right of the door, just past the window, was a closet.

We stood in that open room for what felt like hours, simply taking in everything that we could see.  There was trash on the floor, lots of writings on the walls, broken glass, pieces of wood, and buckets turned upside down.

After exploring the first floor we decided to look upstairs.  It was as we approached the stairs that we began to hear what sounded like whimpers coming from the closet.  The house was about to reveal yet another question, one that would begin a series of events that would leave Craig and I both shaken and fearful.

Come back next time as we encounter The Closet.
