Revelation 1:1-3 (Unveiling the Book)

January 11th, 2017

Revelation 1:1-3

Unveiling the Book

The book of Revelation is about Jesus…it is His revelation

The Bible is a "Him" book

  • Christ is in every book of the Bible

  • Christ is in every chapter of the Bible

  • Christ is in every event of the Bible

Remember, the word revelation means an unveiling or a revealing

Revelation, perhaps more than any other book in the Bible, is about Jesus

  • Revelation 1:5 Christ is the faithful witness

Christ is the firstborn from the dead

Christ is the ruler over the kings of the earth

  • Revelation 1:13 Christ is the Son of Man

  • Revelation 1:17 Christ is the first and the last

  • Revelation 1:18 Christ is the Living One

  • Revelation 2:18 Christ is the Son of God

  • Revelation 3:7 Christ is holy

    Christ is true

  • Revelation 3:14 Christ is the Amen

Christ is the beginning of creation

  • Revelation 5:5 Christ is the Lion from the tribe of Judah

Christ is the root of David

  • Revelation 5:6 Christ is the Lamb

  • Revelation 19:13 Christ is the Word of God

  • Revelation 19:16 Christ is the King of kings

Christ is the Lord of lords

  • Revelation 22:13 Christ is the Alpha and Omega

Christ is the Beginning and the end

  • Revelation 22:16 Christ is the bright morning star

Notice these important truths (Rev. 1:1-2)

The revelation is singular, not plural

  • This is God's revelation

    • It is God's revelation about His plan

    • It is God's revelation for His people

  • Most of Revelation is specifically for Israel as the church will have been raptured

The revelation was given to Christ from God the Father

  • There are things that only the Father knows

The revelation was given Christ to show His servants (plural)

  • We (believers) are the servants of Christ

  • The book of Revelation is an apocalypse…a revealing/unveiling

  • The book of Revelation is not an apocrypha…something hidden

The revelation reveals "what must soon take place"

  • The book of Revelation is a book of predictive prophecy

  • The book of Revelation speaks of things that will happen in the future

  • This phrase in Greek = en tachei = quickly or suddenly coming to pass

    • The idea is not that the event may occur soon

    • The idea is that when it does occur, it will occur suddenly

The revelation was made known to John by an angel

  • This clearly confirms the Apostle John as the author

The revelation was testified to by John

  • What John witnessed was the Word of God

  • What John witnessed was the testimony of Christ

Rev. 1:3 is the first of 7 beatitudes in Revelation:

The first Revelation beatitude (Revelation 1:3) is for all believers

The next two Revelation beatitudes concerns the Great Tribulation

  • Revelation 14:13

  • Revelation 16:15

The 4th Revelation beatitude concerns Armageddon (Revelation 19:9)

The 5th Revelation beatitude concerns the Millennium (Revelation 20:6)

The final two Revelation beatitudes concern the Celestial City

  • Revelation 22:7

  • Revelation 22:14

Notice the three-fold conditions of this first Revelation beatitude:

He who reads – We need to read the Word of God

He who hears – We need to hear the Word of God

  • We need to hear with our ears

  • We need to hear with our hearts

He who keeps – We need to remember that truth without obedience is still disobedience

The time is near (2 Peter 3:8-9)
